Following the recent innovations in terms of internal protection systems for tubeless tyres, including Pepi’s Noodle, MrWolf’s Banger, the Procore of Schwalbe and the foam systems of Huck Norris and CushCore, the Italian brand Vittoria proposes the first customisable foam insert. Like his predecessors, this system is made to protect your wheel and your tyre while cycling at low pressure, which maximises adherence to the terrain.
Named Air-Liner, it brings two innovations into the market, which are aimed at resolving the disasvantages of the inserts that are currently available on the market and, as opposed to these, make it a mass-market product thanks to its wide opportunities for personalisation.
The first innovation is its thick design, made up of two channels cut at the top and the bottom of the foam, which are placed against the wheel and the tread. The former makes the product compatible with any tubeless valve, and the latter creates an air pocket which helps improve its flexibility, thus maximising grip while keeping a good level of cushioning. Furthermore, its thickness even allows to cycle with punctured tyres, as demonstrated by Vittoria’s pro-riders Adam Morse and Jason Memmelaar, who assure they have managed to finish races with deflated tyres thanks to the Air-Liner system. Furthermore, the Air-Liner foam is hermetic to all sealants.
The second innovation is that Vittoria’s new system is cuttable and can be adapted to several tyre sizes from 26 to 29 inches of any brand. To install it, measure it around the wheel, cut it and make a hole in each of the two ends, then attach them and cover them up with the Vittoria sticker included in the package.
The Air-Liner of Vittoria exists in 4 different section sizes to respond to the needs of CrossCountry, enduro, plus and fat bike riders ant its declared weight is of 160gr for the small size cut for 27.5″.
According to Ken Avery, Head of Marketing at Vittoria, the Air-Liner can ride up to 2000 hours while staying efficient and it is very easy to install: “just insert one of the two rods in the wheel, then insert the Air-Liner as if it was an inner tube, insert the second rod and inflate”.
Sold at 170 $ for a pair (the equivalent of 140 €), the Air-Liner is better priced than the CushCore, 189,99 € and represents a real alternative thanks to its largely reduced weight (160gr as opposed to 250gr) and its improved performances.
